Body-protected areas in skin cancer, cosmetic and laser clinics

Procedure rooms where excisions, diathermy, electrosurgery, lasers or IPL are used on the patient are patient areas, and are commonly classified body-protected.

Usually patient areas

  • Skin cancer procedure rooms
  • Laser and IPL treatment rooms
  • Cosmetic procedure rooms using energy devices

Usually not

  • –Consult rooms used only for skin checks without mains equipment applied
  • –Reception and retail areas

Each room’s classification is the practice’s decision, based on how it will be used, with input from clinicians, equipment suppliers and the electrician.

Plan before the walls close

  • Get each laser’s spec sheet early: many need a dedicated circuit
  • Plan treatment beds and devices so leads don’t cross the room
  • Procedure lighting on its own circuit
