Body-protected areas in Victoria
In Victoria, electrical installation work in a patient area is prescribed electrical work. Your electrician installs and tests it, then an independent ‘M’ class licensed electrical inspector inspects it before it’s connected to supply.

Who certifiesYour electrician completes and tests the work and issues a prescribed Certificate of Electrical Safety.
Independent inspectionYes. An ‘M’ class licensed electrical inspector (patient areas) inspects the work before it’s connected to supply. The inspector can’t be someone involved in installing it.
Testing at installTested to AS/NZS 3000 before it’s energised, then to AS/NZS 3003 after energising and before the room is put into service.
Your job as the practiceBefore work starts, give your electrician written notice of where your patient areas are and their boundaries.

What to do as the practice
- Tell your electrician in writing which rooms are patient areas, before any work starts.
- Ask who the ‘M’ class inspector will be and when they’re booked.
- Keep the Certificate of Electrical Safety and the test records with your compliance files.
- Book the retest within 12 months, and before any alterations.
Testing, everywhere
AS/NZS 3003 requires routine inspection and testing of body-protected areas at intervals not exceeding 12 months. The date of the last test goes on the label at the door.
