Do physio and allied health rooms need body protection?

Many allied health rooms aren’t patient areas. But a physio room using mains-powered electrotherapy or therapeutic ultrasound on the patient, or a podiatry room doing nail surgery with electrosurgery, can be.

Usually patient areas

  • Physio rooms using electrotherapy or therapeutic ultrasound on patients
  • Podiatry rooms using electrosurgery

Usually not

  • –Gym and exercise areas
  • –Rooms with only battery-powered or non-electrical treatment

Each room’s classification is the practice’s decision, based on how it will be used, with input from clinicians, equipment suppliers and the electrician.

Plan before the walls close

  • List every mains-powered device used on patients, room by room
  • If in doubt, decide before the fit-out, when it’s cheap to change
