Common questions
Who certifies the electrical work in a dental or medical fit-out?
Your electrician tests the work and issues the certificate your state uses (a Certificate of Electrical Safety in Victoria, a Certificate of Compliance in most other states). What happens next depends on where you are.
In Victoria, patient-area work is prescribed electrical work: an independent ‘M’ class licensed electrical inspector has to inspect it before it is connected to supply, and the inspector can’t be someone who installed it. Other states rely on the electrician’s certificate, with audits by the regulator, or have their own inspection systems. The state pages set out who does what.
As the practice, keep the certificate and the AS/NZS 3003 test results with your compliance files. Insurers, auditors and the next electrician will all ask for them.
