Common questions
What is AS/NZS 3003?
AS/NZS 3003 is the Australian and New Zealand standard for electrical installations in patient areas: hospitals, medical and dental practices, and dialysis locations. It sits on top of the general wiring rules (AS/NZS 3000) and sets the extra requirements for rooms where medical equipment is connected to patients.
It defines body-protected and cardiac-protected areas, what each needs (10 mA RCDs, earthing, outlet identification, signage, cleaners’ outlets), how a new area is tested and verified before use, and routine testing at intervals not exceeding 12 months. Who certifies and inspects the work is set by each state, not by the standard.
You don’t need to read it. You need an electrician who works to it, and the test records to prove your rooms meet it.
